Accounts Update

Jul 04, 2010 at 01:44 AM in None
This weekend we are making several changes to how accounts work with MMO Guildsites.

8TASP ID
The first change is your MMO Guildsites account is now referred to as your 8TASP ID. This is to support future MMO Gaming webapps we plan to launch that will complement MMO Guildsites. If you continue using only MMO Guildsites you should notice no change other then what its referred to as.

Passwords & Resets
Password resets are now improved to email you a link when you do a reset, and clicking that link then takes you to your guild where you can choose a new password, upon which you will then be logged in.

In addition, passwords now have a minimum length of 6 characters. If your password was previously less than 6 characters you should be prompted to do a password reset, and can then choose a new password; if your password was already 6 characters or more no action is needed.

Inviting Members
To invite members to your guild you no longer need to create an account for them, instead you simply enter their email and they will be emailed a link they can follow to then create an account with your guild. This can be done from the members section of your site if you have the members admin permission.

In addition, if you invite an existing member who was flagged as inactive or deleted, they will then become active. This works much like guildapps, where if you approve an app for an existing member they become active, and is designed to help in situations where a member left the guild and came back later, unaware they already had an account and tried to apply again or ask for an invite.

Unlocking Accounts
For your security, your account gets locked after a certain amount of failed login attempts. Unlocking your account happens automatically if you wait out the period, but we now also email you a link you can follow if your account gets locked you can click on to unlock it.

Modifying your Account
When making some changes to your account, you must confirm your password for extra security. This only applies when changing your 8TASP ID settings (email, password, time zone and date of birth), changes to other data such as your profile or member info does not require your password.

That's all for this update, if you notice any issues with the new account system please let us know by sending an email to staff@mmoguildsites.com or by making a post on our support site at http://getsatisfaction.com/mmoguildsites

Ummmm.... Not entirely sure what's going on, but when I bring up the site and log in, and click Remember Me -- It doesn't. Yes, yes, cookies and all that crap are right, every other website I own or visit does "Remember Me". Is there something about the changes I am not understanding?

Are there any previws or advertisment posts that talk about the future MMO Gaming webapps that will use the 8TASP IDs? I'm really curious what these are and what they'll do...

So now the Site Admin can't change members passwords ?

8 Toes over 1 year ago

Hi Pondio,

Allowing Site Admins to change members passwords has always been a bit problematic; before we could only allow it if the user only belonged to your guild site, if they belonged to multiple guilds we couldn't allow it (otherwise you could potentially gain access to their other sites by changing their password), and now that we wish to support multiple apps this further complicates the issue...

So we disabled this feature and instead plan to launch a replacement, allowing you to transfer members belonging to your site between users; this way you are not modifying a users global login, however it would still allow you to help users who perhaps lost access to the email their account was tied to.

Users can always send an email to staff@mmoguildsites.com as well and we can assist them with getting online if they entered the wrong email or cannot receive a password reset (or you can email us on their behalf if you prefer)

Cheers,

The remember me thing is a real problem. I had to log in to even reply to this even tho I was logged in already on my site. My members are getting very frustrated and I can't blame them. The changing password thing I used all the time for my members, This is going to make things a lot harder for them and me. It's getting nuts having to log in over and over, sometimes in the same visit. It's not fixed.

I have also had multiple people this last week who have been dropped from events without them knowing it from the calendar. When i went to the logs to check if anything funny was going on 6 days are missing from the logs,

Reg member don't like to have to send emails to get their accounts working, they are just reg joe's who want to hurry up and get back in the game and play. It's like pulling teeth to get the to go to the website and sign up, this just gives them another excuse to stay clear of the website,

I can't say I'm very happy with the changes right now.

Hi Betinna,

For the remember me feature, we found there were two separate issues caused by our new update that affected this:

The first is the remember me was not being triggered by pages which did not require authentication (so upon returning to your guild site it would not be triggered, leaving you viewing as a guest); this was corrected earlier this morning (around 5am EST)

We discovered a second issue also, the remember me feature uses a token now for enhanced security, and the token was being re-written when you logged in; for example, if you login to your guild site enmity.mmoguildsites.com and check remember me, it generates a token to auto log you in later; however if you then went to www.mmoguildsites.com (or another guild site) and logged in there and checked remember me, it would generate a new token, invalidating the old one for enmity.mmoguildsites.com, making the auto login no longer work for that site. This has also been corrected (around 10am EST today)

The remember me should be working correctly now, however if you continue to notice issues with it from today on please post back here or send an email to staff@mmoguildsites.com to let me know.

For members being dropped from events, the audit log does not yet track event participants, so this info is unfortunately not available there (we are planning to add this info soon to the log tho)

For members having to send emails to get their accounts to work, one of the goals with this update was to aim to reduce the amount this may occur (previously accepted guildapps or accounts created by admins for members had passwords auto-generated and mailed to users, which sometimes would be out of date or entered incorrectly by the user, causing them issues; with the new system clicking the link allows them to select and confirm their own password upon visiting your site and then logging them in)...

In the case where a user applied with the wrong email, this is still currently a bit of an inconvenience for them unfortunately, tho the prior solution of site admins being able to change users emails was becoming less possible as our member base grew and more users already belonged to old guilds, so we feel we need a new solution here, which we hope member transfers will solve (which we plan to launch soon); in the meantime if a user has no data with their account yet and used the wrong email you can go to the members page and invite them by entering their proper email and they should be good; for members with data in their account already please ask them to email staff@mmoguildsites.com or you can email us on their behalf

I hope you're enjoying your summer,

Our guild has been a customer of yours since 2007. Changes come and some we like and some we don't, but we often try to just "roll with it" on most everything.

We need you to restore the ability to reset passwords for folks (as easily as you disabled it). This is a very basic function that anyone that goes and makes their own site would be able to do.

More and more over the years your company has tried to make it so that your company is more in control over our guild sites (the way applications are handled, member logins etc.) as a means to grow your brand and spread your own name. We don't take issue with this so much, but now that it's going to effect our ability to easily take care of something we've been able to do for years...it's gotten out of hand.

We respectfully ask that you either reverse this decision and/or at the very least make it so our guild still can. It matters to us, we've been able to since 2007 with your company...and we'll be making our own site if you don't. It'll suck if we have to do that by the way, but at least our admins will be able to do simple things that you aim to limit and we'll probably add a ton of other functions you currently don't offer anyhow. PLEASE reconsider and save yourself a customer and save us the expense and time of making a new site.

Thanks for your consideration,

Hi Rapture,

Thank you for your feedback regarding this, and based on your feedback and a few others we reinstated the feature to reset passwords for guild members today (providing they only belong to your guild) =)

For trying to take over more control of your site this really wasn't our intention, and I apologize if these changes suggested that. We try and stay out of the way as much as possible between guilds and their members, with one of the goals of our site that regular members never even have to visit www.mmoguildsites.com, and instead should be able to do all actions from within your guild site.

Cheers,
